Physicians and Midwives of Macon provide obstetrical and gynecological care for women throughout their lifespan. The midwives manage most of our low risk pregnancies and deliveries. Patients generally rotate their prenatal visits among all of the providers in order to become familiar with our entire team.
YES! Midwives are specialists in well woman care and can perform annual physicals and pap smears. We see women for their birth control needs as well. Midwives are excellent health care providers for adolescent women. Menopausal women needing hormone replacement therapy can also see midwives.
For pregnant women in need of cesarean sections, our collaborative physicians perform the surgery. The midwives serve as their first assistants during these deliveries. For gynecology patients requiring surgical intervention, we refer them to our collaborative doctors for a consult regarding surgical options.
No. Midwives of Macon is a hospital-birth based practice. We believe practicing within a hospital environment provides our patients with more options during their childbirth experience. For our low risk patients desiring unmedicated deliveries, we support intermittent monitoring, freedom of movement in labor, and hydrotherapy. By practicing within a hospital setting, it also makes interventions such as epidurals available to our patients if they desire. Our primary hospital is Navicent Health (The Medical Center of Central Georgia) where our office is located. We also have privileges at the Coliseum Hospital. Both hospitals provide NNICU services if they are needed as well.

The term "midwife" literally means "with woman". Midwives are highly trained and skilled healthcare professionals who focus on providing women with quality care throughout their lifetimes. Nurse-midwives are nurses who go on to complete graduate degrees in nursing and midwifery. Their practice includes the management of women's healthcare needs from adolescence through menopause, with a special focus on normal pregnancy and birth. Midwives practice within a collaborative agreement with OB/GYN physicians and surgeons in order to provide women the best care possible in the event surgery or other services are needed.
